Let’s face it, life would be much easier and a lot more exciting if we could use sex magic and love spells. C’mon, you can’t tell me you haven’t at least thought about it. A guy ghosts you? You can use your charms to lure him back in. He’s not into you? No problem. Just give him some of Elaine’s Juju juice. If he cheats on you? Well, that’s an easy fix, you could just hex him, so that he meets a sudden tragic death. I know, I took it too far. But that’s the problem with magic, or in Elaine Parks world, power. She just took things way too far. You see the Love Witch directed by Anna Biller and starting Samantha Robinson is a cult classic. Why, because it sets the tone for other great beautiful horror films like the The Substance and the The Ugly Stepsister. But instead of Elaine transforming into a hideous monster. She becomes a beautiful one. The Love Witch showcases the dangers of normalizing ugly behavior, and how we use people and even religion to mask our own cruelty. So if you’re fascinated with Elaine’s spiral into lunacy, or you’re a huge fan of the Love Witch, you’re going to want to watch this video.
The Love Witch Controversy
Firstly, let me just say that everyone thinks that the Love Witch is about witchcraft. They are wrong. The Love Witch is about bitchcraft. They are two totally different things. You know how Hoodoo is a form of southern folk magic. It has Native American magic, African spirituality, and even some European Pagan influence. Well, bitchcraft is a mixture of greed, deceit, trickery, with a little bit of magic thrown in. In truth, it is a perversion of witchcraft. Love spells for example, was used by ancient priestess, not to trap a man, or even dominant him, but to heal and inspire him. Witchcraft was used as a form of transcendence to get closer to nature and therefore to God. The whole concept of using and abusing people, is simply a perversion that was passed down from the good old fashion patriarchy.
The Love Witch Coven Explained

Gahan, the infamous coven leader was a great example of this. In his sick and twisted mind, he believed that he was teaching women about the power of the goddess. In truth, he just wanted to get his dick wet. I’m sorry, I did it again. I am trying so hard to keep these videos clean for the algorithm. Anyhoo, Gahan was ugly as sin, and preyed on beautiful, damaged women to live out all his wild fantasies. Prince Julian in the Ugly Stepsister was indeed very handsome, but shallow. He saw woman as just bodies for his own enjoyment. Harvy, from the Substance was just as bad, if not worse. He had a good forty-years to grow out of his misogynistic ways. Instead, he berates Elizabeth, firing her because he believed that she was too old, to host a prime-time fitness show. All of these men as characters are losers, but sadly, they are a reflection of our patriarchal system. They make the rules and we minions, well we follow them.
The Love Witch Coven Explained
Except for witches. I know, historically, witches have gotten a bad rep. In truth, witches have always been the rebels, fighting against the man, and an oppressive regime. Elaine for example, was born beautiful. Yet, she was constantly beaten down by her father and later, her ex-husband Jerry. Gahan saw that she was a wounded little bird and wanted to get on some of the action. Elvira was also blessed with inherent beauty. But when her mother Rebecca constantly eats away at her self-confidence, her internal beauty starts to wane. Elizabeth Sparkle at fifty, could run circles around women half her age. Yet, she lets Harvey get into her head, convincing her that she’s old and washed up, and just needed to lay and die. All of these men tell woman who and what they should be. Worse, they set the bar so high, with crazy standards, that no normal woman can realistically achieve them. So they cheat, enduring painful cosmetic procedures like Elvira in the Ugly Stepsister. Or, injecting a harmful black-market drug, Like Lizzy. They do this, in attempt to become beautiful in the eyes of their oppressor. But much like Elisasue, they become monsters in the process.
What’s the deal with Elaine from the Love Witch
This process of creating a monster happens early on in The Love Witch, when Elaine leaves San Francisco, and her murderous cult. She seems to be on the right track, moving into an apartment, I would die for, and painting pieces that I would spend thousands of dollars to have. But sadly, Elaine, brought all of her baggage with her, including her cunning and killing ways. Rebecca, Elvira’s mother believed that she could escape poverty by marrying rich. Only for her husband to kick the bucket before the ink was even dry. To make matters worse, her sugar daddy was penniless and wanted her money. The irony of it all. Sadly, Rebecca passes her baggage onto her daughter, Elvira. Rebecca, convinces her that her only salvation was to marry rich, but we all know how that turned out. Elizabeth could have retired in the South of France with a twenty-year old beau at her beck and call. Instead, she felt like she had something to prove. She had to show the world, i.e, Harvey, that she was still relevant. We see this with the oversexualization of her counterpart Sue. Who not only rocks Harvey’s world, but blows the ratings out of the park. All of these women believe that if they can just step it up, that they are going to thrive in this patriarchal world. But are there really any winners in a rigged system?
The Love Witch Movie Explained
Elaine is desperate for a man and feels the need to bear her claws whenever she is within six feet of one. She tramples all over poor Miss Curtis, snatching her man, Professor Wayne, right from under her. Elaine, much like Elvira can only feel whole and validated when she has a man at her side. Like Agnes, Elvira’s stepsister, Elaine can use her charms to bewitch a man. But sadly, she can’t make him or herself happy. Why? Well because bitchcraft just leads to misery. Wayne like Prince Julian is tall, dark, and handsome. He is everything that a woman would want and more. But when Wayne pours his heart out to Elaine, she is repelled and disgusted by him. And it’s not because he’s overly emotional, like men say most women are. It’s because Wayne is a reflection of Elaine’s inner woes and fears. She sees herself in him, and in typical Elaine fashion, feels the need to runaway. Only, Wayne does her one big favor, he dies. Setting her off to find her next victim, a mean man. The precarious balance between Lizzy and Sue is disrupted, when Sue takes more time, despite the consequences. This shows the sad truth of how Lizzy would choose to rot away, just to be young and beautiful once again. Worse, beauty seems to be a deadly elixir for all three women. The more alluring and powerful they become, the uglier they behave.

The Love Witch Movie Analysis and Body Horror Genre
Elaine befriends Trish, only to have an affair with her husband when she is away on a business trip. Elaine wants what Trish has, a stable relationship that has spanned over ten years. Yet, Elaine fails to realize that Richard is a reflection of her own clingy and obsessive behavior. And once again, another man obliges her by dying. Lizzy Sparkle cannot see that the split between her and Sue is bringing out the worst in her. She too refuses to look in the mirror and see how Sue, is merely an alter ego, that is silently killing her. Sue is the beautiful piece of herself that she projects to the world, why the real her slowly withers away and dies. Elvira consumes a tape worm, that robes her of her nutrients and her soul. Her new thinner sleeker body allows her to climb the political ranks of beauty, winning the respect of her dance and charm teacher, but at the expense of ignoring one sister, and torturing another.
What was the Love Witch movie about?
But sadly, in the patriarchal system and in the politics of beauty, there is a Hunger Games element to it. Women feel the primal need to kill or be killed. Elaine, Sue, and Elvira have no qualms about breaking a bitch down to get what they want. Sue, sick of the seven days on and seven days off agreement with Lizzy, decides to stockpile a whole bunch of substance juice. She makes it for a good three months, before she starts to deteriate, right before her hosting gig at the New Years Eva galla. Elvira ripped Agnes’ dress, so that she couldn’t attend Prince Julian’s ball. Then, she threatens to hack her to pieces once she finds out that Agnes was Prince Julian’s mystery girl. Elaine was truly cold hearted and cold blooded, as Trish mourns her late husband, Richard. In true bitchcraft fashion, she boasts about her new lover, leaving Trish reeling from jealousy and pain. All three woman engage in monstruous behaviors, that slowly erodes their soul, and inevitably, their prize possessions, their beauty and charms.

Elvira, loses her hair and her mind. Like Elaine, the fantasy of falling in love with a prince has become an addictive drug, and she is on a high that she can’t seem to come down from. Her desperation reaches its peak, when she cuts her foot off in an attempt to fit Agnes’s shoe. Sue and Lizzy engage in an ultimate showdown, exchanging blows and insults, resulting in Lizzy going down for the count. Sadly, with Lizzy dying, Sue literally starts to fall apart, and looks for yet another unconventional solution for her woes. Trish and Elaine engage in a bitchy catfight. This of course happens, after Trish sneaks into Elaines apartment and finds that she was indeed having an affair with her husband and he died as a result of it. Again, all three women are beginning to see the consequences of their actions. Yet, they cannot stop. The rewards for bad behavior are too high. Sue is ontop of the world. She is America’s sweetheart and parties all day and night. Elvira is finally thin enough to fit into Agnes dresses. She is graceful enough to be the lead dancer at Prince Julian ball. And she is beautiful enough to turn heads, attracting at least a half dozen suiters. While Elaine is lost in love. Griff, the chiseled police sergeant falls victim to her charm. He is swept away into her fantasy of love and romance, even agreeing to a mock wedding. But sadly, what goes up, must come back down. All three women are forced to take a brutal look at themselves.
What was the point of the Love Witch Movie
Sue wants a better version of herself, after seemingly killing her other half, Lizzy. Only taking the substance activator turns her into Elisasue, a hideous monster who showers her audience with rage and bloodshed. Agnes attends the ball, despite Elvira and Rebecca’s wishes. She walks in beautiful, veiled, and late, all while capturing the eye of the rich and powerful Prince Julian. Elaine is confronted by Griff and later attacked by the bar patrons for being a witch. This is the first time that Elaine is truly suffering from the consequences of her actions. Elvira feels the sting of being rejected by Prince Julian, but instead of congratulating Agnes on her victory. She threatens to hack her to pieces, all while taking her shoe. You would think that Elaine being attacked would be a humbling experience. But yet, she plows forward, looking to snag Griff in another one of her love spells.
The Love Witch Killing Scene

Only something really strange happens. She sees herself in him. She sees her own emptiness, pain, and turmoil. For the first time, Elaine is confronted with her shadow. Elisa Sue went through strenuous efforts to conform to an unrealistic beauty standard. As a result, she became disillusioned, becoming the monster that society had created. Elvira cuts off her foot, chips her tooth, breaks her nose, and still thinks that she had a chance to be with Prince Julian, so long as she can fit Agnes’ shoe. And Elaine kills Griff, because she’d rather live in a fantasy world, than face reality and her own monstruous behavior. You could say that all of these characters were caught up in some type of wicked spell, a spell that caused them to choose a fantasy over real life, and real love. And all these characters were more bitchy than witchy. They misused their power, to the point of their own demise.
